Mt. Ararat (5165 m)
The highest mountain of Turkey, close to the boarder with Armenia is covered by legends and stories. This are was closed for many decades due to political conflicts of the neighboring countries.

Also nowadays it is a very sensible area. Therefor we need a special permit from the Turkish authorities that we are waiting for already 2 month to get it. Hopefully we will be able to explore this area finally. Nobody should find any reason not to let us enter Arart with our clean political history...

Turkey is a very mountaneous country even if it does not look like that on first sight. Most of the area cover the Anatolian high lands with average altitude 1000 m. Here you can find high mountain ranges and volcanos over 4000 m. The highest of all is Mt. Ararat. We will try to climb and ski down not only the highest peak but also some other ones which are in no way less interesting. We will try to climb Mt. Erciyes and Mt. Hasan.

Mt. Damavand (5671 m)
DAMAVAND is not only dominating with it’s height 5671 m, but also with it’s shape. It’s regular conic shape is visible from far away and leaves you with similar feelings like Japan’s Fujiyama. Damavand is very similar to Mt. Ararat with it’s shape and altitude, but there is also one difference. Damavand is part of a huge mountain range, the 2000 km long sea of mountains – Alborz. It is also not that sleeping volcano like Ararat. There is no glaciar on the top of Damavand and every few years it lets the paople living in the are feel its shakes. We will look also for nice puder snow on other neighbouring mountains in the Alborz range.

Mt. Aragats (4090 m)
is the highest point in Armenia located in the province of Aragatsotn, northwest from Yerevan. It is a standalone extinct stratovolcano with four main peaks forming the rim of the crater. Located on its slopes are the Byurakan Observatory and the medieval Amberd Fortress. The observatory is known worldwide, and it is one of the main observatories in the world. To the south of the mountain is Ashtarak, one of the main cities. On the other sides of the mountains are villages and towns.

According to legends, Grigor Lusavorich (Gregory the Illuminator), climbed to the top of Aragats to pray and witnessed a light descending upon him from heaven. The legend claims that this same light can be seen today, but only by those chosen to be able to see it. We hope to be one of those to see it as well ;)

Aragats is a large andesitic-to-dacitic stratovolcano in NW Armenia about 40 km NW of the capital city of Yerevan. The 4095-m-high main edifice of Aragats is dissected by glaciers and is of Pliocene-to-Pleistocene age.

During the spring time there is still enough snow for ski touring. We guess this will be one of the most exciting adventures during our expedition.
